چکیده

The study demonstrates that an incompatibility between a surface temperature climatology and a given ocean model, into which the climatology is assimilated via Haney restoration, can cause model ocean climate drift and interdecadal oscillations when the ocean is switched to a weaker restoration. This is made using an idealized Atlantic Ocean model driven by thermal and wind forcing only. Initially, the temperature climatology is forcefully assimilated into the model, and an implied heat ̄ux ®eld is diagnosed. During this stage any incompatibility is suppressed. The restoring boundary condition is then switched to a new forcing consisting of a part of the diagnosed ̄ux and a part of the restoring forcing in such a way that at the moment of the switching the heat ̄ux is identical to that prior to the switching. Under this new forcing condition, the incompatibility becomes manifest, causing changes in convection patterns, and producing drift and interdecadal oscillations. The mechanisms are described.

Cloud-resolving simulation of TOGA-COARE using parameterized large- scale dynamics

[1] Variations in deep convective activity during the 4month Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere-Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA-COARE) field campaign are simulated using a cloud-resolving model (CRM). Convection in the model is coupled to large-scale vertical velocities that are parameterized using one of two different methods: the damped gravity wave (Damped-wave) method and t...

Variations in Ocean Surface Temperature due to Near-Surface Flow: Straining the Cool Skin Layer

The aqueous thermal boundary layer near to the ocean surface, or skin layer, has thickness O(1 mm) and plays an important role in controlling the exchange of heat between the atmosphere and the ocean. Theoretical arguments and experimental measurements are used to investigate the dynamics of the skin layer under the influence of an upwelling flow, which is imposed in addition to free convection...

Deep Convection in the Ocean

SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES Issues specific to oceanic deep convection are the relatively strong role of rotation, such that convective Rossby numbers appropriate to the vertical motions may fall below unity; the highly intermittent nature of the forcing, with the strong impulses coming during the passage of atmospheric weather systems; the possible highly localized occurrence of deep convection; and...

Mechanisms for convection triggering by cold pools

Cold pools are fundamental ingredients of deep convection. They contribute to organizing the subcloud layer and are considered key elements in triggering convective cells. It was long known that this could happenmechanically, through lifting by the cold pools’ fronts. More recently, it has been suggested that convection could also be triggered thermodynamically, by accumulation of moisture arou...

Dynamics and Thermodynamics Analysis of Tropical Cyclone Haiyan

Tropical cyclone Haiyan (TCH) that formed over the West Pacific Ocean during 3-11 November 2013 has been investigated using three datasets produced by Japan Meteorology Agency, ECMWF and NCEP. Strength of TCH has been studied using two synoptic parameters of 10-m wind velocity and mean sea level pressure (MSLP). Following, three dynamic parameters including vertical wind shear (VWSH) vector, he...
